Smile Line Filler

Smile lines, technically known as nasolabial folds, are the creases that extend from the corner of the nose to the mouth and curve around the corner of the mouth. These lines deepen with age, creating a shadow effect. Many patients inquire about ways to eliminate smile lines as they believe these lines contribute to an aged and fatigued appearance.

Nasolabial folds are a natural occurrence but tend to become more pronounced due to the gradual loss of volume in the face over time. The fat pads in the cheek area descend and flatten as we age, accentuating our smile lines. Lifestyle factors like smoking, sudden weight loss, or poor diet can exacerbate the appearance of these lines.

Starting in our early 20s, the levels of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid in our bodies decrease. Research shows that individuals over 80 experience a significant reduction in collagen production, even with consistent sun protection, compared to younger adults in their 20s.

These essential components provide structure and elasticity to our skin. As their levels decline, skin laxity increases, leading to the formation of deeper folds and wrinkles.

Hyaluronic acid, a natural substance in the body that attracts and retains moisture, is a key component of dermal fillers. These fillers are widely used for their ability to hydrate and plump the skin.

Filler treatment for smile lines typically involves injecting filler along the cheekbone to reshape the mid-face, creating a lifted appearance that reduces the heaviness of the nasolabial fold. Additional filler may be placed directly into the fold to minimize its depth and create a smoother appearance.

The procedure is generally not painful, as the area is numbed with a topical anesthetic beforehand. Any redness, swelling, or tenderness at the injection sites should subside within a day or two.

Results are immediate, with the effects lasting between six and 12 months, depending on the individual. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if desired.

Dermal fillers are considered safe when administered by skilled practitioners using reputable products. At Refresh London, we prioritize safety and quality to ensure beautiful and natural-looking results. It is generally not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or individuals with active skin conditions in the treatment area.
